The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the syllabus for Class 10 along with important changes in the exam system. From the 2025–26 academic session, students will have to appear for board exams twice a year. The first exam, to be held around February–March, will be compulsory for all, while the second exam in May will be optional for those who want to improve their scores. Competency-Based Questions
As per the latest circular released by CBSE, the focus of the exam would be on competency-based questions. These questions are aimed at finding out how you utilize specific skills in your experience and how you take (take with a grain of salt idiom synonym) support of these skills to solve certain problems and tasks in your day-to-day life. These can also be addressed as behavior or situation questions often used in interviews. The CBSE would give more weightage to such questions in the upcoming board examinations. These questions would help the student think logically and get rid of rote learning.
Objective Type Questions
Students have a perception that objective-type questions are related only to MCQs but they might also include a variety of other questions such as
- Statement questions
- Multiple-choice questions
- Column Matching questions
- Assertion and Reasoning questions
- True and false questions
- Fill up questions
Subjective Questions
As per the latest CBSE class 10 syllabus, the weightage of subjective questions would be 30%. The subjective questions usually include long or short-answer-type questions.
CBSE Class 10th Exam Pattern 2026
In order to assess the students in a better way the complete CBSE class 10th exam pattern for the session 2025-26 is given below.
Starting from the academic year 2026, CBSE will hold the Class 10 board exams twice a year. The first exam will be compulsory for all students, while the second exam will be optional and mainly for those who want to improve their marks or could not clear certain subjects. Both exams will be based on the full syllabus, and students will be allowed to improve their performance in up to three subjects during the second exam. The first phase is expected to be held around February–March, and the second phase around May.
For the CBSE class 10 board exam question paper, 20% weightage is given to multiple choice questions, 50% weightage to competency-based questions, and 30% wastage for subjective type questions.
To get familiar with the new exam pattern and know the analysis of their preparation the students can choose to practice several sample papers. The sample papers as per the latest curriculum will be released on the CBSE official website.
These questions would have various types such as multiple-choice questions, case-based, source-based integrated, or any other form.
