The IIT fees for BTech 2026 range from approximately ₹9.10 Lakhs to ₹13.90 Lakhs for General, EWS, and OBC-NCL students, and that figure includes much more than just (just in case definition) tuition. If you are preparing for JoSAA counselling and want to know exactly what you will be paying, semester by semester, at each of the 23 IITs, you are in the right place.
Let’s start with a quick snapshot: the IIT fee structure consists of 5 parts: Tuition Fees, One-time Admission Charges, Refundable Deposits, Institutional Fees (for each semester) and Hostel & Mess Charges. At all 23 IITs, the tuition fee remains constant at ₹1,00,000 per semester. However the actual costs of the 4 years will differ depending on which IIT you join due to hostel charges, mess advances and campus-specific fees.
At all the IIT’s, SC, ST and PWD students receive 100% waiver on tuition, irrespective of the family income. The family income of the students of General, OBC-NCL, and EWS is also waived off if it is less than ₹1 lakh per annum. For the people who fall within ₹1-5 Lakhs, they have to pay only ₹33,333 per semester and not ₹1,00,000. In addition, there are scholarships such as Merit-cum-Means (MCM) which provide financial assistance for up to 25% of the BTech students.
In this blog, we’ve discussed the detailed fee structure of IITs course-wise, a tabular summary of the IIT fees based on the actual data of 2026, category-wise fee benefits, the list of scholarships, and the most cost-effective 20 BTech courses.

- One-Time Admission Charges: Admission & registration fee, grade card fee, provisional certificate fee, alumni association subscription and welfare/modernisation fund. Only paid in the first semester.

Category-wise Fee Benefits at IITs: Who Pays What in 2026?
Not all students pay the same IIT fees. The fee concession system is organised and properly defined. How it works is this:
- SC / ST / PwD Students: 100% Tuition Fee Waiver in all 23 IITs. Total 4 year cost is less than ₹1.5 to ₹3 Lakhs (hostel, mess and institutional charges only).
- Family Income Below ₹1 Lakh/year (General, OBC-NCL, EWS): 100% Tuition Waiver. Only institutional charges or hostel/mess charges are applicable.
- Family Income between ₹1-5 Lakhs/year (General, OBC-NCL, EWS): 2/3rd tuition remission. You pay just ₹33,333 per semester instead of ₹1,00,000.
- For family income of more than ₹5 Lakhs/per annum: full fees will be charged. No tuition waiver for tuition.
Insider tip: The income-based remission is not a scholarship but a right to which one competes. Provide your income certificate by the Tehsildar or any higher revenue authority (issued after April 1st of the financial year) along with the ITR acknowledgement at the time of reporting. Missing this document means losing the concession for that semester.
Scholarships Available at IITs: Eligibility and What You Get
In addition to the fee waiver, there are a few scholarships that can lower or eliminate your fee. The ones that are worth knowing about are:
- Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship: Eligibility: Up to 25% Students (General, OBC, EWS) of BTech with an income of the family of less than ₹5 Lakhs. Benefit: Tuition waiver plus ₹1000 per month pocket money.
- Free Messing Allowance (SC/ST): Eligibility: SC/ST students from a family income of less than ₹4.5 Lakhs. Benefit: Free basic meals, Free hostel rent and pocket money of ₹250 per month.
- Top Class Education Scheme (SC Students): Apply on the National Scholarship Portal. Benefit: Tuition, living allowance of ₹3,000 per month, books of ₹5,000 per year and up to ₹45,000 for a laptop.
- National Fellowship for ST Students: Family income less than ₹6 Lakhs. Completely pays tuition, books and living expenses.
- Central Sector Scholarship: (Top 20th percentile in the Class 12 board and family income below ₹4.5 Lakhs). ₹12,000/year for the first 3 years and ₹20,000 in the 4th year.
- Aditya Birla Scholarship: Top 20 JEE Advanced rankers at select older IITs. ₹1,00,000+ per year.
- State Government Schemes: All the non-waived fee of the students of that state who take (take with a grain of salt idiom synonym) admission in the IITs is reimbursed by almost all the states. There are active schemes in Rajasthan, MP, Bihar and UP with an annual reward ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000/year.
One IIT Fee Detail Most Students Miss During JoSAA
Here’s something competitors do not normally tell you: the IIT fee structure as mentioned in the brochure of IIT and what you require to arrange prior to Day 1 of joining are different numbers.
At your first attendance at the IIT, you have to pay the Semester 1 fees and all the caution deposits and the one-time admission charges at once. Some IITs have the outflow at ₹1.5-₹2 Lakhs even after waives in the first semester. One of the most common pitfalls is not preparing for anything other than the ‘annual fee’.
Moreover, there is a huge benefit for the education loans to the students of IIT. Because IITs are Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs), banks such as SBI, Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank etc. process IIT education loans faster, sometimes without collaterals up to ₹7.5 Lakhs, and offer better interest rates (8-10.5% vs 12%+ for private colleges). If required apply before JoSAA round 1 as disbursement takes time.

Why These Courses Score High on VFM
- The Non-Core Pivot: In IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi, EE, IEOR or Mechanical Engineering students frequently secure analytics, finance and consulting positions at competitive salaries compared to CSE. There’s no requirement to take pure CS for a premium position.
- Mathematics & Computing (MnC) Surge: IIT Delhi MnC and IIT Kanpur MnC are heavily targeted by Wall Street quant desks and HFT firms. Average packages of ₹38+ LPA make these among the highest-ROI BTech programs in India right now.
- Newer IITs Catching Up Fast: IIT Hyderabad CSE, IIT Guwahati Data Science & AI and IIT Indore CSE are offering an average salary of ₹24-₹28 LPA with a lower overall course fee as compared to the other IITs namely IIT Bombay or IIT Kharagpur.
