The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2026 (IOAA 2026) is the highest school-level Astronomy and Astrophysics world competition for those who enjoy space science. This exam is organised annually by the IOAA Foundation and the 19th edition will take (take with a grain of salt idiom synonym) place from 25 September to 5 October in Hanoi, Vietnam. IOAA’s primary purpose is to discover young talents in astronomy and astrophysics and provide them with a world platform to develop. The first selection process held at the national level is in their respective countries. This course of action typically involves passing through the National Standard Examination in Astronomy and the HBCSE Mumbai OCSC camp in India. Those who pass this stage have the opportunity to represent their country at an international level.
There are two components of the exam pattern, i.e., theory and practical. It is an examination of subjects such as cosmology, stellar evolution and celestial mechanics. Applicants who are in 11 or 12 standard and age of students less than 20 can apply. This blog provides all the information regarding the IOAA 2026 schedule, syllabus, eligibility, and prizes in plain terms.

What Is the IOAA 2026 Exam Pattern?
The IOAA 2026 exam pattern consists of two main parts and the weightage of both parts is not different.
- The Theory paper covers 50 per cent of the total marks. It has 5 short questions, 5 medium-length questions, and 2 to 3 long questions.
- The practical part is also 50 per cent of the marks, allocated to data analysis 25 per cent and observation 25 per cent. Interestingly, this is where the Astronomy Olympiad data analysis exam comes back in, where the student is tested on their ability to read a graph and identify errors and perform calculations. Each observation task can be a real sky observation, a planetarium simulation test, or a computer-based problem.
- Students get five hours to finish the theory paper, and five hours in total for all practical tasks, spread across several days with at least one free day in between.
| Theory Paper | 50 per cent weight, 5 hours, short, intermediate plus long questions |
| Data Analysis | 25 per cent weight, part of the practical round |
| Observation | 25 per cent weight, real sky or simulated tasks |
| Total Practical Time | 5 hours across all practical tasks |
| Minimum Exam Days | At least 4 days, with 1 free day between the first and last paper |
Note: This year, IOAA has arranged the official telescope and calculator for every contestant. The Sky-Watcher BK P15075 EQ3 telescope will be used for sky observation tasks, and each student gets a Casio fx-82CW calculator IOAA kit, so no personal calculators are allowed inside the exam hall.
Who Can Apply? IOAA 2026 Eligibility Criteria
The IOAA 2026 eligibility criteria are simple to check before you plan anything further.
- A student must be born on or after 1 July 2006, which means they should be under 20 years old this year.
- The student must not have finished Class 12 or its equivalent before 1 January 2026.
- The student must also be a citizen or a regular resident of the country they represent, and a valid passport is needed for international travel.
- Only one main team per country can take part in IOAA 2026, though new countries without a ready team may still join as observers to learn the process for future editions.
Team leaders and observers also need to follow some rules:
- They should be teachers, scientists, or past Olympiad winners who can guide students and take part in academic discussion during the event.
- They must also feel comfortable speaking and writing in English, since this is the official language used throughout the competition.
How Do You Organise a Team for IOAA 2026?
- Each country can send one main team of up to 5 students to IOAA 2026.
- Teams with 4 or 5 students get 2 team leaders in total.
- Teams with 2 or 3 students get only 1 team leader.
- A team with just (just in case definition) 1 student and 1 leader is called a guest team, not an official team.
- No student can attend the competition without at least one team leader present.
- Team leaders must submit each student’s name, date of birth, address, and school certificate in English.
- Team leaders also become members of the International Board, which handles Olympiad matters and stays in touch with every participating country. A country that wants to send only observers, without any students, can still take part in this way, though such members are not counted as an official competing team.
What Does the IOAA 2026 Syllabus Cover?
The IOAA 2026 syllabus comprises two parts: one being theory and the other being practicals, and it has both basic and advanced concepts related to Space Science. Topics in the IOAA theoretical exam vary from simple mechanics to profound concepts in cosmology. There are no complex numbers or difficult differential equations, the syllabus only requires high school-level physics and maths.

How to Apply for IOAA 2026: Registration Process and Fees
After a student passes the national round, the team leader will carry out the IOAA 2026 exam application and registration process for them, not the student. The team leader completes all the forms via the official web portal, which is made available by the organising committee and deposits the fee before the designated deadline.
- Students do not register on their own for this international science event.
- The main team fee is 1200 Euro for up to 5 students and 2 leaders.
- If the team has 3 or fewer students, the fee changes to 250 Euro per person.
- Observers pay 1600 Euro each, and visitors pay 2000 Euro each for the event.
- Countries that hosted IOAA between 2016 and 2025 skip the main team fee entirely.
- First-time countries can apply for a fee waiver, decided case by case by the organising committee.
- Travel costs are paid by each country, while local stay and meals come from the host. Local hospitality begins on 25 September 2026 and ends on 5 October 2026, covering stay, transport, and cultural programs for every registered delegation.
When Will IOAA 2026 Results Be Declared?
The IOAA 2026 results were announced on 5 October 2026 after the closing ceremony of the 19th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics in Hanoi, Vietnam. The final results were based on students’ performance in the theory, practical, observational, and data analysis tests. India performed well and won four gold medals and one silver medal. The scores were first shared with the team leaders of each country before the results were announced. Students can check the complete results and medal list through the official IOAA website. Along with medals, students also receive certificates based on their performance, including certificates of merit, honourable mentions, or participation certificates.
What Awards and Recognition Does IOAA 2026 Offer?
International Astronomy Olympiad awards follow a fair and fixed scoring method every year. The IOAA gold medal criteria depend on a reference score, set at 50 per cent of the total marks or the median score of all students, whichever number turns out to be lower. Around 200 to 300 students usually compete each year, so medal cut-offs shift a little every time (race against time phrase meaning) based on how this whole group performs.
- Bronze medal goes to students scoring near the reference score, based on natural gaps in scores.
- Silver medal goes to students scoring around 1.3 times the reference score.
- Gold medal goes to students scoring around 1.6 times the reference score.
- The IOAA 2026 medal cut-offs shift slightly every year, based on how the whole group performs.
- Honourable mention certificates go to students who score well in only theory or only practical.
- The Overall Winner receives a special prize for the single highest total score.
- Top scorers in theory and practical sections separately also receive extra certificates. The organising committee may also give a few special prizes at its own discretion, based on unique performance during the event.
How to Prepare for IOAA 2026?
For those wondering how to prepare for IOAA 2026, make sure to do it early enough and establish the basics first as the exam values gradual effort over instant tricks.
- Read NCERT Physics and Maths books for class 11 and 12 to develop a foundation.
- Select the best books for the Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, like Astronomy: A Physical Perspective by Kutner, Introduction to Modern Astrophysics by Carroll and Ostlie.
- Practice IOAA past papers with solutions PDF, which are free on the official IOAA website.
- Sit for your country’s national astronomy test, which in India includes the National Standard Examination in Astronomy.
- Attend selection camps, like the HBCSE Mumbai OCSC camp, once you qualify at the national stage.
- Work on speed and accuracy in data analysis questions, since many students lose easy marks there.
- Use the scientific calculator and basic sky maps as much as possible and try some timed practice papers before test day. Use a simple revision chart to practice formulas and constants, review weak topics weekly, and do not wait until last month.
