Along with your score, the rank list and category-wise qualifying marks will also be published on the same day.

The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff is the minimum score required to qualify for the rank list and participate in IIT admissions. IIT Roorkee has released the category-wise qualifying cutoff after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2026 results. Candidates can now check the cutoff marks and qualifying criteria for General, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, and PwD categories here.

Now, what can you expect? According to the official cut-off data of IIT Kanpur for 2025, the CRL (General category) qualifying marks are 74 out of 360 and a minimum of 7 marks for each subject. In 2024, the CRL cutoff was 109 (a much larger increase, as that paper was relatively easy). Analysing the 2026 paper and the trend, the experts believe that the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff for the General category may fall somewhere between 74 and 90 marks in all three sections as an aggregate, i.e. 360 marks.

Students often get it wrong. The IIT JEE cut-off that is published with the result is only the minimum you need to appear on the rank list. It does not guarantee an IIT seat. Your actual admission depends on your All India Rank (AIR) and the choices you fill during JoSAA counselling. Think of the cutoff as the entry ticket. What matters next is how high above it you scored.

The JEE Advanced 2026 qualifying marks have been released by IIT Roorkee. This page provides category-wise qualifying marks and detailed JEE Advanced cutoff trends from the last four years, including official cutoff data released by IIT Kanpur. It also covers the key factors that influence changes in the JEE Advanced cutoff each year, helping students better understand cutoff patterns and qualification criteria. The CRL range of 74-90 is reasonable for 2026, as the paper difficulty level has been rated as moderate to difficult at IIT Roorkee.

The difference in CRL and OBC-NCL/EWS is also remarkably stable in the range of 8-11 marks over the years. The SC/ST cutoff has been kept at around 30-50% of the CRL cutoff in general. Passing the qualifying cut-off point does not automatically mean that you will be accepted for counselling. Rank determines admission.

Subject-wise minimum is non-negotiable: All three – Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics must individually cross the minimum. You cannot compensate with one strong subject.

More than 1.5 to 1.8 lakh students appear for the JEE Advanced exams with total IIT BTech seats being around 17,695. If you get any of the IIT seats, you are in the top 10-12% of the people who appear.

Cutoff is not equivalent to admission: IIT Bombay CSE (General) has always closed below 100 ranks. The IIT Roorkee Civil Department may be closed at lower ranks below 5000. Qualifying matters but ranking is the determining factor in your options.

The Preparatory Course cutoff: This is about half the SC/ST cutoff and is specifically for candidates who only fall short of the qualifying bar of the reserved category. In 2025, it was only 1 mark for each subject and 18 marks in total.

JEE Advanced 2026 Result Date: June 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM IST at jeeadv.ac.in. The qualifying cutoff is released at the same time (race against time phrase meaning) as the result.

What Decides the JEE Advanced Cutoff Every Year?

The JEE Advanced qualifying marks are not fixed. They move every year based on four things:

Paper difficulty: This is the biggest factor. If the paper is tough, then the cutoff for the JEE Advanced is reduced accordingly, as it affects all the scores. The 32% decline from 2024 to 2025 is a prime example of the same number of seats, the same percentage structure, but a more challenging exam results in a lower cutoff.

The number of students appearing for the test: The higher the number of students, the more competitive the exam will be, generally. However, the paper difficulty is a more significant factor for cutoff movement.

Student overall performance: If the questions are easier or the topics are more predictable, then the cutoff will rise if students do better overall. This was certainly the case in 2024.

Available IIT seats: The number of seats in IITs changes slightly year to year. A small increase in seats can have a minor softening effect on cutoffs at the margins.

One Practical Tip from the Faculty of Motion Education: Consider your cutoff as the ground and not your target. Include 35–40 marks above the expected qualifying marks as your personal minimum. This buffer safeguards you from surprises at the time of counselling through JoSAA.

JEE Advanced Qualifying Cutoff vs IIT Admission Cutoff – Do Not Confuse the Two

This is the single most common source of confusion among students, and it is worth being very clear about it.

Qualifying Cutoff is the minimum marks needed to be included in the JEE Advanced rank list. If you score above it, you get an AIR. That is all it does.

Admission Cutoff is the opening and closing rank at which a specific branch in a specific IIT closes during JoSAA counselling. This changes every year and is published separately after each counselling round.

If a student wants to pursue a top IIT in CSE, Electronics, Electrical branches, he/she should have a CRL rank of 500-1000 in the General category. For the General category, Mechanical and Civil generally rank between 3000 and 7000 in mid-tier IITs. These are historical figures; actual figures are subject to change from year to year depending on seat availability and student preferences.

Motion Education’s Insights for JEE Advanced 2026 Aspirants

At Motion Education, we have witnessed thousands of students in this very situation. Our faculty regularly stresses the following:

Students aiming for 40+ marks more than the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff are in a better spot, as qualifying is not enough to open the gates to IIT; it is rank that matters.

On the subject level, Mathematics is frequently the key to success for students who are equally ranked. If you score well in Maths, you can get a high rank.

Never neglect to prepare for the minimum marks in subjects. If one subject score is 0, then you will be disqualified even if your total score is above the cutoff.

Frequently Asked Questions – JEE Advanced 2026 Cutoff

Q1. When will the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff be released?

The JEE Advanced 2026 result and qualifying cutoff will be released on June 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM IST on jeeadv.ac.in. Both the rank list and the category-wise minimum qualifying marks are published together on the same day.

Q2. What is the JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff for the General category?

The official JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff for the General (CRL) category is 92 aggregate marks out of 360, with at least 8 points in each subject. Candidates who meet both the aggregate and subject-specific cutoff criteria are placed on the Common Rank List (CRL) and are eligible for IIT admissions via JoSAA counselling.

Q3. What was the JEE Advanced cutoff in 2025?

The JEE Advanced 2025 official cutoff released by IIT Kanpur was: CRL 74 marks aggregate (7 marks per subject); OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS 66 marks (6 per subject); SC, ST, and all PwD categories 37 marks (3 per subject); Preparatory Course 18 marks aggregate (1 per subject).

Q4. Can I qualify for JEE Advanced if I score well in two subjects but poorly in one?

No. The JEE Advanced rank list requires you to meet the minimum marks in each subject individually as well as in aggregate. A poor score in even one subject, say, 2 marks in Chemistry for a CRL candidate, will get you excluded from the rank list regardless of your total.

Q5. Does qualifying for JEE Advanced guarantee a seat in an IIT?

No, qualifying Cutoff means you are on the rank list and are eligible for JoSAA counselling. Seat allotment in an IIT is a real thing and will be determined by the AIR, your preference of branches and the way the counselling rounds go. A lot of students qualify for the cutoff, but if their rank is not competitive for the available branches, they don’t get an IIT seat.

Written By: Saumya Sarin (Content Writer at Motion Education)

Reviewed By: Motion JEE Faculty

[Based on Official Data;
