Motion Deploying Employees While Leading Edtech Unicorns In India Are Laying Off Their Employees

With the commencement of the new academic session, schools and colleges are reopening in India due to a drop in Covid-19 cases. This retuning of students back to their school premises has decreased the demand for online batches. EdTech sector emerged as the rescuer during the pandemic. However, the decline in Covid cases brought setbacks in the hiring of new employees to balance out the hybrid model of learning.

Indian EdTech Consortium (IEC) recent analysis revealed that in the last 5 years, the EdTech sector produced more than 75,000 job opportunities in the country. According to CMIE, the unemployment rate decreased to 6.57%, which was 7.11% before March 2021. There are over 50,000 professionals serving in the EdTech companies.

Vedantu, Unacademy, Lido Learning, etc., which previously hired professionals from various domains are now laying off their employees.

  • Vedantu

The founders Vamsi Krishna, Pulkit Jain, Saurabh Saxena, and Anand Prakash revealed that they had re-evaluated 3.5%, i.e., 200 employees. Both full-time and contractual-based employees are laid-off by the organization.

  • Unacademy

This Bangalore-based start-up Unacademy fired 1000 employees, from the education, sales and business development departments. These employees are from Unacademy group, including CodeChef, Graphy, PrepLadder, and Relevel. The organization’s spokesperson said, “Based on the outcome of several assessments, a small subset of employee, contractor, and Educator roles were re-evaluated due to role redundancy and performance, as is common for any organisation of our size and scale. The vast majority of roles impacted have been a result of that process, and the efficiency we aim to drive in the broader business.”

Motion balancing out the hybrid model by hiring both online and offline experts

The offline mode in the education industry is now building the fear of job insecurity among employees of the leading EdTech firms. On the contrary, Motion Education is creating opportunities for academic and non-academic job seekers. Motion Education is the Kota-based coaching institute, tutoring students to crack NEET, JEE and other competitive olympiads (NTSE, KVPY, etc.) and schools’ exam, including CBSE classes X & XII board exams. The institute’s headquarter is situated in Kota and has so far inaugurated 55 centres in various regions of India. Comparing the months of the year 2022, when other EdTech organizations are laying off the workforce, Motion has hired 320 employees so far across India.
